Good morning, Suncoast. Courts & Crime

1. Court papers detail Bradenton murder case

New court records fill in what Manatee County deputies say happened before and after the killing of 44-year-old Starr Lashua in Bradenton, the Bradenton Herald reported Wednesday. Quazone Elijawun Taylor, 34, is charged with second-degree murder in Lashua's death and attempted first-degree murder with a weapon in the earlier stabbing of a 15-year-old boy. According to an arrest report cited by the Herald, investigators say Taylor was hiding at Lashua's duplex in the 700 block of 59th Avenue East, and that family friends later found her body wrapped in a sheet beneath a mattress and debris behind the home. The medical examiner determined she died from "homicidal violence," according to the sheriff's office. Taylor is being held without bond; his next hearing is set for Oct. 30.

Why it matters: The newly released arrest details are the fullest public account yet of how detectives built the murder case.

2. Third suspect arrested in Venice home invasion

Venice police have arrested a third suspect tied to a Sept. 23 armed home invasion in the 3000 block of Laurel Road East, WWSB / MySuncoast reported Wednesday. Frankie Bartolo Mercado Jr., 43, of Cape Coral, is charged with home-invasion robbery with a weapon, kidnapping, armed burglary with battery and aggravated assault. Detectives allege he helped plan the targeted robbery, supplied equipment and drove the other two suspects to the area. Police previously arrested Justin Anthony Mitchell and Brevaun Williams, both 34; court records show both entered not-guilty pleas Monday. Investigators said one suspect fired toward a family member who came to help; the relative was not hit. Police say all three suspects are accounted for and there is no ongoing public threat.

Why it matters: The third arrest closes the known suspect list in a violent home invasion Venice police called isolated.

3. Crane tips into ditch near Fruitville Road

A crane went into a ditch while its operator was rounding a corner near East Road and Fruitville Road in Sarasota, WWSB / MySuncoast reported Wednesday. Fire crews responded at 7:45 a.m. No injuries were reported, and East Road was blocked while two larger cranes were brought in to lift the smaller one back onto the street. The cause of the tip-over was not immediately clear, and damage details were not available.

Why it matters: The tip-over briefly closed East Road and pulled recovery crews into a busy Fruitville corridor.

4. Humane Society plans major Bradenton campus rebuild

The Humane Society of Manatee County is preparing a phased campus transformation that would replace its aging Bradenton adoption center with a facility nearly double the size, WWSB / MySuncoast reported Wednesday evening. Executive Director Rick Yocum said the new adoption center is expected to span about 11,800 square feet, up from roughly 6,700 today, with storm-resilient animal housing and an emergency generator so animals can stay on campus during hurricanes. Phase one renovates a vacant north-campus building into about 3,000 square feet of cat space, with work hoped to start in November and finish by May or June 2027. A past adopter made a major gift that let the project move years earlier than expected, Yocum said; community support is still needed to furnish and equip the new spaces.

Why it matters: The rebuild would modernize a 1947-era shelter and keep animals on site through storms.

5. Afternoon storms linger through the weekend

Tropical moisture is keeping an unsettled pattern over Southwest Florida into early next week, WWSB / MySuncoast meteorologist Bob Harrigan reported. Thursday brings showers and thunderstorms likely after 3 p.m., a high near 88, southeast winds gusting up to 25 mph, and a 60% chance of rain with amounts from a quarter inch to 2 inches possible. Friday's rain chance rises to 70%, with a heat index that could climb as high as 105. Forecasters advise scheduling outdoor plans for the morning and securing loose outdoor items ahead of gusty storms.

Why it matters: Elevated rain chances and gusty winds are the main outdoor planning story for the next several days.
