Overnight Roundup

While You Were Sleeping: Saturday, Oct. 17

Saturday's overnight catch-up: federal investigators at the Myakka City helicopter crash site, a shooting near the south bridge to Siesta Key with no one hurt, a rainy and windy weekend with rough water, a sheriff's warning about fake victim-advocate calls, and Anna Maria Island's final sea turtle nest count.

Empty wooden lifeguard stand on white sand with a red flag blowing in the wind, sea oats on the dunes, choppy green Gulf water and dark rain clouds over a pale sunrise

Good morning, Suncoast. The front everybody's been talking about all week is here, and the first thing it brought was rain on the roof. Overnight there's an update from the investigators in Myakka City, a quiet-ending but unsettling call near Siesta Key, and a warning about phone scammers worth passing along to anyone you love. The turtles get the last word, as they should.

Public Safety

1. NTSB investigating Myakka City helicopter crash; pilot identified

The pilot killed when a Manatee County Mosquito Control helicopter crashed Thursday night near Dakin Dairy Farms in Myakka City has been identified as 63-year-old Isaac Moore, WWSB reports. Moore was the only person aboard the Bell 407, which went down in a wooded area behind homes about 8:56 p.m., according to the National Transportation Safety Board. Bystanders pulled him from the wreckage before first responders arrived, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The NTSB said he was on his first mission of the day and was heading back to reload and refuel. Investigators have not yet confirmed whether the helicopter struck a nearby tower or what caused the crash, and they plan to spend several days documenting the site. Moore flew helicopters for the Columbus Division of Police in Ohio for more than 32 years before retiring.

Why it matters: The NTSB is reviewing the pilot's records, the helicopter's controls, transmission and rotor system, and the weather and lighting conditions that night.

2. Shooting near Siesta Key's south bridge; no injuries reported

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting reported at 12:44 a.m. Saturday in the 6000 block of Gateway Avenue, just off the south bridge to Siesta Key, WWSB reports. A sheriff's lieutenant said no injuries were reported and there is no threat to public safety. Anyone with information is asked to call the Criminal Investigations Section at (941) 861-4900 or visit SarasotaCrimeStoppers.com.

Traffic & Tides Weather

3. Rainy Saturday, then a windy, rough-water stretch

The cold front brings numerous showers and isolated thunderstorms to the Suncoast through the day Saturday, with a moderate rip current risk and moderate lightning risk at the beaches, according to the ABC 7 First Alert Weather team. The rain clears out Sunday, but winds could gust up to 30 mph. On the water, north winds build to 20 to 25 knots Saturday afternoon, and Sunday brings northeast winds of 25 to 30 knots with seas of 4 to 6 feet, occasionally 8. A Small Craft Advisory runs from 5 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Tuesday.

Why it matters: Bay and inland waters are forecast to be very rough Sunday through Tuesday, so small-boat plans may need to wait.

Public Safety

4. Sheriff warns of scam calls posing as victim advocates

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office says it has received several recent reports of callers pretending to be agency victim advocates, WWSB reports. The callers use technology that makes their numbers appear to come from the sheriff's office, then try to persuade residents to send money. The agency urged people to be cautious with any unexpected call asking for payment and noted that a number on caller ID does not confirm who is calling.

Why it matters: A call that looks like it's from the sheriff's office may not be, and the agency is asking residents to share the warning with friends and family.

5. Anna Maria Island's turtle season ends with 460 nests

Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch released its final numbers for the 2026 sea turtle nesting season, documenting 460 nests in what it called an average year, WWSB reports. Hatchling production was down, likely because of beach erosion, water intrusion and more coyotes preying on nests. The group's report said disorientations, when adults and hatchlings head toward land instead of the water, often because of artificial lighting, remain very high. Turtle Watch will spend the next few months checking the data before compiling it for the county and state.

Why it matters: Turtle Watch will be at Bayfest on Saturday, Oct. 17, and holds its annual Suzi Fox Turtle Watch fundraiser on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
