Overnight Roundup

While You Were Sleeping: Sunday, Oct. 25

Sunday's overnight catch-up: the Rays blow a 4-0 lead and fall 2-0 in the World Series, gale-force gusts are possible on the water today, Manatee deputies arrest nine in a DUI patrol, Sarasota's Babe Ruth league honors a longtime volunteer, and Gulf Coast Pride fills the Rosemary District.

A folded newspaper, a cup of coffee and a baseball glove holding a ball on a wooden bench along a bayfront seawall at sunrise, with palms bending in a stiff wind and sailboats rocking on choppy water

Morning, Suncoast. It's Sunday, the wind has picked up right on schedule, and anything not tied down on the porch is thinking about leaving.

The Rays had a big first inning and a long night after it. There's a windy forecast worth reading before you launch anything, a busy Friday for Manatee deputies, and a Sarasota ballpark that said goodbye to one of its own. Here's what happened while you slept.

Sports

1. Rays blow early lead, trail Brewers 2-0 in World Series

The Tampa Bay Rays lost Game 2 of the World Series 5-4 to the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday night in Milwaukee, the Associated Press reports. Tampa Bay scored four runs in the first inning, on RBI singles by Chandler Simpson and Junior Caminero and a two-run homer by Liam Hicks, but Milwaukee chipped back. Sal Frelick tied it with a home run and Cooper Pratt hit a go-ahead single in the seventh, and Aaron Ashby struck out Yandy Díaz with the tying run on third to end it.

Why it matters: The series moves to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg for Game 3 on Monday night; the AP notes 46 of the 57 previous teams to take a 2-0 World Series lead went on to win it.

2. Rough water and gale-force gusts possible today

A small craft advisory is in effect for Suncoast waters until Wednesday evening, WWSB reports. Forecasters expect northeast winds to strengthen Sunday and Monday, with gusts of 30 to 34 mph, and WWSB's boating forecast calls for gale-force gusts on the water Sunday afternoon and very rough bay and inland waters. On land, the forecast stays sunny with highs in the mid-80s, and the tropics are quiet for the next seven days.

Why it matters: Forecasters say only experienced boaters in well-equipped vessels should head out Sunday, and many may choose to stay ashore.

3. Nine arrested in Manatee DUI saturation patrol

The Manatee County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit arrested nine impaired drivers Friday during a DUI saturation patrol, WWSB reports. Deputies also tested two other drivers, filed eight misdemeanor charges, issued 45 citations and 22 warnings, and wrote one criminal traffic summons.

Why it matters: The sheriff's office says its next saturation patrol is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 20.

4. Sarasota Babe Ruth league honors longtime volunteer

Dozens of friends, family members and former players gathered at Babe Ruth Park on Saturday for a celebration of life for Peter Orser, who volunteered with the Sarasota Babe Ruth Baseball League for more than 20 years, WWSB reports. League president Todd Williams said Orser handled everything from field maintenance to concessions. "Every single baseball team relied on Pete," Williams said.

Why it matters: Williams said Sarasota County has painted "In memory of Peter Orser" across one of the fields at the park.

That's the news, friends. If you were planning a boat day, today might be a lanai day instead. Game 3 is Monday at the Trop. See you tomorrow morning.
