The Baldy Breakdown Is Must Watch

Brian Baldinger's latest film study makes the case that the Bears run the ball better than anyone, and the trick is simple: follow the tight ends. Two and a half minutes, six plays, zero wasted words.

Some guys watch film. Brian Baldinger teaches it, with a telestrator and the energy of a man who just found twenty bucks in a coat pocket. His latest Baldy Breakdown is on the Bears' run game, and it's must watch.

Watch on X if the player doesn't load.

The short version

The film is from Sunday's 23-12 win over the Jets at Soldier Field, where Chicago ran 54 times for 232 yards. Kyle Monangai had 146 of them and two touchdowns. Baldy's whole thesis fits on a bumper sticker: follow the tight ends. They tell you where the ball is going.

  • Colston Loveland (84) comes across the formation to kick out the edge, and D'Andre Swift cuts it back inside.
  • Cole Kmet (85) and Darnell Wright (58) block in tandem, in Baldy's words, "better than anybody." The second level gets sealed, and Monangai runs away from the one guy left unblocked on purpose.
  • At the goal line, Kmet and Loveland seal everything across the board and Monangai walks it in.
  • Three tight ends, one in motion to double the edge, and the hole is just sitting there.
  • Roschon Johnson comes in and the backside seal still holds. His point: it doesn't matter who the running back is.
  • Pin-pull power out of the shotgun, with Joe Thuney (62) pulling through the hole and Rome Odunze throwing his body into a block downfield. Baldy calls it power football. Hard to argue.

That's two and a half minutes, and you come out understanding more about run blocking than most of us learned in a whole season of yelling at the TV. Follow @BaldyNFL for more of these. He makes offensive line play feel like a heist movie.

Next up

The Bears visit Green Bay on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 1 PM ET. Chicago is a 3-point favorite and the over/under is 45.5 (DraftKings line via ESPN). Lambeau in October, against a defense that has now seen this tape too.
