Good News on X: A Green Flash, Afternoon Baseball and a Very Lucky Terrier

Somebody caught the green flash off Longboat Key, the Rays play an afternoon ALCS game, a little dog walked out of Yellowstone after 34 days, and Lucy turns 75. Thursday's good stuff from X.

The National Weather Service in Tampa Bay says we're in on the cooldown this weekend: upper 80s and low 90s today and Friday, then upper 70s to mid 80s Saturday and Sunday. That's not sweater weather. It is, however, open-the-windows-for-an-hour weather, and around here that counts as a season. So pour the coffee. Here's what people on X were happy about since dinnertime.

Somebody actually caught the green flash off Longboat Key

You've stood on the beach for it. I've stood on the beach for it. Most of us have stared at the sun until we saw spots and called that close enough. Wednesday evening, Jeremy LeBarre really got it: that split-second green wink right as the sun slips under the Gulf, photographed from Longboat Key. Florida meteorologist Matt Devitt shared it with a credit to LeBarre via @StormHour, and it's the prettiest thing on my timeline this week.

Devitt's note is the key part: a second or two, and only in perfect conditions. So keep a clear western horizon handy, don't blink, and never mind your friend who swears they see it every night.

Playoff baseball with your lunch

ALCS Game 3 got moved up to 1 p.m. ET because of the weather forecast in Cleveland, so the Rays and Guardians play this afternoon at Progressive Field with the series tied 1-1. ESPN lists Griffin Jax going for Tampa Bay and Gavin Williams for Cleveland. The Rays' social team has already posted its game-day graphic, and honestly the vibe is right.

The line, per DraftKings via ESPN: Cleveland -1.5 (run line), moneyline CLE -134 / TB +111, O/U 6.5. The home team is favored. The Rays have never looked bothered by being picked against.

More good news from the glove department: Rawlings named shortstop Taylor Walls and left fielder Chandler Simpson as American League Gold Glove finalists on Wednesday. The winners get announced on ESPN on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 8:30 p.m. ET.

And for anybody who loves an underdog: this is a small-market October. Milwaukee leads the Dodgers 3-0 in the NLCS, and Game 4 is tonight at 8 p.m. ET at Dodger Stadium. DraftKings via ESPN: Los Angeles -1.5 (run line), moneyline LAD -157 / MIL +130, O/U 7.5.

The Lightning's chairman told the best "how I bought a hockey team" story

The Lightning kicked off a new season of their Block Party show with Jeff Vinik, the team's chairman, and the full sit-down is up on YouTube. My favorite part: he says the idea came to him walking a concert concourse at a Jingle Ball. He asked his friend what he was going to do for fun the rest of his life, said "I'm going to buy a hockey team," and the next morning he did what any of us would do. He Googled how to buy a sports team.

His one regret after 17 years? He'd have made every seat in the arena two inches wider. That's a man who has sat through a lot of hockey, and I respect it.

A 10-year-old terrier outlasted Yellowstone for 34 days

Luna, a little Jack Russell from California, slipped out of her family's cabin in Yellowstone's Canyon Village area on Sept. 10. On Wednesday, Oct. 14, she was found alive and well. Katie Boucher of the Norris Ark Training and Recovery Center, a Montana rescue group, led the search. Because food bait could pull in the bears and coyotes Luna had been dodging, they set a trap with her family's familiar scents instead. Per Cowboy State Daily, when the team went back Wednesday morning, Luna was sitting in the doghouse they'd left there for shelter, waiting for them.

She lost about 10 pounds and went straight to a vet, and her owner flew in from California for the reunion. Boucher's text when it was over: "We got her!" Ten years old, more than a month in the wilderness, and she still came home. Give your dog an extra biscuit tonight.

Fifteen frogs the size of a pencil tip

London Zoo announced the first-ever births under human care of Afia Birago's puddle frogs, a critically endangered species known from just two pools in Ghana's Atewa Hills. Twenty adults came to London last year so keepers could figure out how to care for them. Now there are 15 froglets, each about 5 millimeters long, and the know-how is going back to a breeding center in Kumasi, Ghana.

The sweetest line came from Caleb Ofori-Boateng, the Ghanaian conservationist who helped describe the species and named it for his mother: "Her name will be linked to a species we saved, not one we lost." I'll be over here, fine, not crying into my coffee at all.

Lucy is 75, and the snacks agree

I Love Lucy premiered on CBS on Oct. 15, 1951, and the tributes have been rolling in since before sunrise. Hollywood Yesterday put it best:

It also happens to be National I Love Lucy Day, National Cheese Curd Day and National Shawarma Day, all on one Thursday. Whoever runs that calendar knows what they're doing. If you've ever stuffed chocolates in your hat at work, today is your day too.

The Roadster finally shows up tonight

Tesla says the next-generation Roadster event streams live tonight at 7:55 p.m. Central, which is 8:55 p.m. our time, on X and at livestream.tesla.com. The first prototype was shown back in 2017, so a lot of people have waited a long time for this one. Elon Musk is calling it "a candidate for greatest product demo of all time," which sets the bar about as high as a bar can go.

It starts about an hour after the NLCS first pitch, so tonight's plan is two screens, one bowl of cheese curds, and nobody touches the remote.

That's the good news for Thursday. Watch the 1 o'clock game, eat a cheese curd for Lucy, and if the sky is clear tonight, keep your eyes on the horizon right at sunset. You never know.
