The Gators Just Beat No. 7 Texas, Auburn Toppled No. 1 Georgia, and It's Only 7 PM
Florida upset No. 7 Texas 27-24 in Austin behind a backup QB's first career start, Auburn knocked off No. 1 Georgia on a last-second field goal, and Ohio State won at Indiana. Here's every final that matters, Florida teams first, plus tonight's lines for FSU-Miami, Kent State-USF and Nebraska-Oregon.
Seven hours ago I told you today's only plan was college football and a Jäger bomb or two. I did not tell you the Gators would win in Austin. Nobody told anybody that. Texas was favored by 13.5 at kickoff.
Still filling in while Kevin is in the Douro Valley, and I'd like the record to show the Gators won on my watch. Here's where the day stands at about 7:15 PM, with the night games just kicking off.
Florida teams first
Florida 27, No. 7 Texas 24 (final). Read that again. Tramell Jones Jr., making his first career start for the injured Aaron Philo, went 22 of 35 for 155 yards and two touchdowns, both to tight end Lacota Dippre, with no turnovers. Florida fell behind 17-3 after a Ryan Niblett punt return touchdown, then scored 24 straight. Patrick Durkin's 28-yard field goal gave the Gators their first lead, and Jadan Baugh (25 carries, 91 yards) bounced an 11-yard run outside to make it 27-17.
Texas got within three on Arch Manning's 9-yard touchdown pass to Cam Coleman, then got the ball back with a chance. That's when linebacker Myles Graham sacked Manning and forced a fumble, and defensive back Kanye Clark recovered it with 1:58 left. Jones then ran for a first down on third-and-7 and the Gators took a knee. The UF recap says Florida's defense came in 131st in the nation against the pass and held Texas to 272 total yards with five sacks. Two weeks of blowout losses, and then this. Football.
The Gators' social team had exactly the right amount to say about it:
Top-10 road win. Good.

And the play that ended it, credited properly:
DE-FENSE 👏 👏 Myles Graham forced it. Kanye Clark recovered it.

Army 56, Florida Atlantic 24 (final). Army quarterback Cale Hellums ran 25 times for 195 yards and five touchdowns, which is a fine way to spend a Saturday if you're Cale Hellums. FAU's Caden Veltkamp threw for 318 yards and three scores, and Easton Messer caught 14 passes, but you can't throw your way past an offense that never gives you the ball back. Army was a 2.5-point favorite. They covered by roughly a marathon.
UCF was off. Lucky them.
The rest of the afternoon

Auburn over No. 1 Georgia is the other jaw-dropper. Byrum Brown ran for 115 yards and a touchdown and threw for another, Georgia tied it at 24 with 2:58 left on a Gunner Stockton touchdown pass, and then Auburn's A. McPherson hit a 34-yard field goal with two seconds left. Georgia was a 19.5-point favorite. Somebody in Athens is staring at a wall.
Ohio State 19, Indiana 15 was the grind it looked like on paper. Julian Sayin hit Jeremiah Smith for a 38-yard touchdown early in the fourth, Indiana answered with a touchdown and a two-pointer, and the Buckeyes held on. Indiana's Charlie Becker had 165 receiving yards in a losing effort.
Tennessee ran it right at Alabama, with DeSean Bishop going for 147 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries. Bama's offense never found it.

Canes-Noles was scoreless midway through the first quarter when I hit publish. Miami is 5-0 and laying 20.5 to a 3-3 FSU team, and after the afternoon we just had, I'd tell any Miami fan feeling comfortable to look at Georgia's Saturday. USF (4-2) is a 20.5-point favorite over Kent State (2-4) at home, so keep it on the second screen and enjoy the Bulls running up the scoreboard. Nebraska-Oregon at 11 is still your 2 AM finish line.
A Jäger bomb for every upset today would already be a medical event, so switch to water for a quarter or two. Drink responsibly, eat something, and nobody drives. The couch will still be here at 2 AM.
Scores and stats from ESPN's live scoreboard and game pages, pulled about 7:15 PM ET; Florida-Texas details also from UF Athletics and the AP via ESPN. Lines are DraftKings via ESPN, pregame for games already underway, and will move. Rankings are as listed in this morning's slate.
