Nightwatch
Nightwatch: The Dogs Won Texas. A Crane Took a Ditch.
Late-shift notes from the public blotter: Manatee K9 teams bring home USPCA hardware, a school lockdown that started with student tips, a third Venice home-invasion arrest, and one crane that preferred the ditch.
Coffee went cold somewhere between the second refill and the third traffic call. The scanner kept going. Here is what public agencies and local news put on the record before the late shift wound down. These are public releases and reporting. Arrests, where they come up, are accusations — not convictions.
Manatee K9s came back from Texas with hardware
MCSO posted today that members of the K9 Unit earned top awards at the United States Police Canine Association Nationals last week in Abilene, Texas. Lt. Jeremy Bertolino and K9 Vinnie took first place overall, plus first in Search Work and Obedience and second in Criminal Apprehension. Dep. Kyle Chavers and K9 Tyr placed fourth overall, with second in Search Work and third in Obedience. Both handlers were on the regional team that finished first, and Dep. Keith Bush worked as a decoy through the training and the meet. I have sat through enough overnight shifts to know the dogs do not care about your coffee. They care about the find. Tonight they get the mention they earned.
A lockdown that started with classmates
WWSB and WENG report Manatee School for the Arts in Bradenton went into lockdown Tuesday after a student allegedly made a threatening comment on social media. Principal Dr. Steve Marshall said the school acted out of an abundance of caution, and that students who reported the tip were a vital front line. Local police located the student on campus, took them into custody, and removed them from campus. No injuries were reported. The school is not releasing further details, citing student-privacy law. Names stay out of this column. The tipsters get the credit. If you see something online that does not sit right, say something early. That still works better than hoping it ages out of the feed.
Venice says the third arrest closes the circle
Venice police, via WWSB and Gulf Coast News Now, announced a third arrest Tuesday in connection with a Sept. 23 armed home invasion on Laurel Road East. Detectives allege the person helped plan the robbery, shared information about the residence, supplied equipment, and drove the other two suspects to the area. The earlier two arrests were made with help from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit. Police say all three suspects are accounted for, call it an isolated incident, and say there is no ongoing threat to the public. Names and victim details stay off this page. The charging paperwork can handle that. Anyone with information can call Venice PD at 941-486-2444 and reference case VPD26002104.
One crane, one ditch, zero injuries
WWSB says a crane went into a ditch while rounding a corner near East Road and Fruitville Road around 7:45 a.m. Fire crews responded. No injuries. East Road got blocked until two larger cranes came over and stood the smaller one back up. Cause was not immediately clear. Overnight takeaway: if your vehicle is taller than a mailbox and you are negotiating a Florida corner, the ditch has been waiting for you all morning.
Quiet blotter does not mean a quiet brain. I will be back around the 2 a.m. stretch. You can go to sleep. I will keep the scanner on.
