Review Roast: The Parking Lot Ate My Ticket and the Beach Was Too Beautiful
Real one- and two-star reviews of Sarasota treasures, lovingly roasted: a Ringling ticket with nowhere to park, Selby construction fences, a 'worst beach ever' that was also beautiful, and a Riverwalk rated as a cheap date. Counter-complaints filed!

I came for lunch ideas and stayed for the one-star reviews. Friends, the Suncoast's grumpiest corners of the internet are a buffet, and today I am plating counter-complaints! Nobody gets named. I'm roasting the gripe, not the griper. Every quote is real, and every one is linked.
Exhibit A: The parking lot ate my ticket
A two-star review of The Ringling warns, with feeling: "DO NOT buy your tickets online!" Why? "I bought an online ticket but when I arrived the parking lot was packed and there were no available places to park my car so I had to leave."
The ticket worked! The art was waiting! The villain was a full lot. That is not a museum problem. That is a Florida in-season plot twist.
Counter-complaint filed. The Ringling's own tickets page says the Museum of Art, Bayfront Gardens and Glass Pavilion are free on Mondays if you register in the Visitors Pavilion when you arrive, and the grounds cover 66 acres of bayfront gardens. Pro move: show up, find a spot, then claim the free Monday art pass — or buy online only after you've parked. The Rubens can wait five minutes. The parking space cannot!
Exhibit B: The fence said "sorry sucker"
A two-star review of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is mad about the master-plan construction, and honestly the phrasing is chef's-kiss: after paying, the first sight was "a chain-link fence covered with canvas signage letting us know how much better the gardens will be than they currently are (sorry sucker)." Same review adds, "I don't go to botanical/nature sites to see and hear construction work."
Fair! Fences are not orchids. But calling a living museum a sucker punch while it builds a hurricane-ready home for its collection? Bold strategy.
Counter-complaint filed. Selby's president told Your Observer the Phase 2 footprint is fenced off and "the rest of the gardens are open", with exhibitions and bayfront access continuing through a planned November 2028 opening. The downtown campus is still open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.. You paid for a garden. They are literally building a tougher one around it!
Exhibit C: Worst beach ever (also: loved everything)
This one-star Coquina Beach review is my Roman Empire. Title energy: worst beach ever. Body text: "Beach is beautiful.. Loved everything about beach.. But everything is worse.. For parking took for ever." Also the restrooms had a line. Exhausting!
If your one-star review starts with "Beach is beautiful," I rest my case! That is not a failure of sand. That is peak season doing peak-season things.
Counter-complaint filed. Manatee County lists Coquina Beach with parking, restrooms, showers, changing cabanas, a playground, volleyball, concessions and beach wheelchairs, open sunrise to sunset. Popular beaches get lines. Bring a wagon, go early, and keep loving everything about the beach — including the part where other people also love it!
Exhibit D: Only okay for a very cheap date
A two-star take on the Bradenton Riverwalk admits "My husband loved it." Then: "Personally, I wouldn't do it again." The closer? "Maybe it would be okay for a very cheap date."
A free waterfront stroll with fish, people-watching and a built-in second opinion from your husband... rated as budget romance. I am taking that as a compliment on behalf of every picnic blanket in Manatee County!
Counter-complaint filed. The Riverwalk is a city waterfront park along the Manatee River with a walking path, playgrounds, public art and a skate park — the kind of date where the view does the heavy lifting and your wallet barely notices. Cheap? Darling, that is the feature!
The verdict
The lot filled up. The fence went up. The beach was beautiful and busy. The Riverwalk was free. Suncoast, you remain too much, and I am filing these counter-complaints with a cold drink and zero regrets!
Seen a gloriously petty review of a place you love? Send it my way. I'll bring the forms and a fork!
