Good News on X: Milwaukee Swept LA, Hedman Won It in OT and the Cats Cleaned Up

The Brewers swept the Dodgers into the World Series, the Rays play a tight Game 4 tonight, Victor Hedman won it in overtime, a spoonbill posed at Rose Park and Cat Depot won five awards. Friday's good stuff from X.

Good News on X Every morning. See the whole weekly lineup →

Friday, and the good stuff piled up overnight. A small-market baseball team did the thing nobody picked them to do, the Lightning needed overtime and a 6-foot-6 defenseman, and Sarasota's cats are officially award-winning now. Coffee's on. Here's what people on X were happy about since dinnertime.

The Brewers are going to the World Series

Milwaukee finished off a four-game sweep of the Dodgers on Thursday night in Los Angeles, winning 6-4, and is headed to its first World Series since 1982. Per ESPN's game page, the Dodgers were up 4-0 early, with Shohei Ohtani hitting his first homer of the postseason. Then the Brewers just kept showing up. Garrett Mitchell hit the go-ahead homer off Tanner Scott in the sixth, and David Hamilton, the No. 9 hitter, who had four home runs all regular season, added a two-out solo shot off Edwin Díaz in the ninth.

A year ago these same Dodgers swept Milwaukee in the NLCS. This year it went the other way, against the two-time defending champs, and Milwaukee closed it out in L.A. The Brewers' social team has been up all night and it shows, in the best way.

Jake Bauers was named NLCS MVP. The only other time the Brewers made the World Series, they were still in the American League and lost to the Cardinals in seven.

The Game 4 closing line, per DraftKings via ESPN: Los Angeles -1.5 (run line), moneyline LAD -151 / MIL +135, O/U 8. Milwaukee was the underdog. Nobody seems to have told them.

The Rays need this one tonight

Now for our end of the bracket. Cleveland took Game 3 on Thursday afternoon, 3-2, and leads the ALCS 2-1. Game 4 is tonight at 8 p.m. ET at Progressive Field on TBS and truTV, per ESPN, with Nick Martinez listed as Tampa Bay's starter. Cleveland hadn't named one on ESPN as of this morning. Game 5 is Saturday night, also in Cleveland.

The line, per DraftKings via ESPN (pulled about 9:20 a.m. ET Friday): Tampa Bay -1.5 (run line, +163), moneyline TB -110 / CLE -109, O/U 6.5. That's a coin flip with the Rays a hair in front, on the road.

Here's the part I can't stop thinking about. Neither the Rays nor the Brewers has ever won a World Series. If Tampa Bay wins three of the next four, somebody's first title is guaranteed.

Victor Hedman, overtime, backhand

The Lightning beat Seattle 4-3 in overtime at home Thursday night, and it took a defenseman to finish it. Victor Hedman scored on a backhand 2:07 into overtime, with the assist from Pontus Holmberg, per ESPN's box score. It was his first goal of the season, which is a pretty good way to get the first one.

Brandon Hagel scored twice, and Ilya Mikheyev put Tampa Bay up 3-2 in the third with his 100th career goal, per the team. Seattle tied it with 4:19 left in regulation, and then Hedman went and got it back. The Bolts are 5-2-0. Whoever runs their account celebrated with 24 exclamation points, and honestly, fair.

The pregame line, per DraftKings via ESPN: Tampa Bay -1.5 (puck line), moneyline TB -278 / SEA +225, O/U 6.5. Seven goals, so the over came in too.

That's not a flamingo, it's better

Kristi Stahr posted Thursday's sunset from Rose Park on Palma Sola Sound, the stretch of water between West Bradenton and Anna Maria Island, and on the way home she caught a roseate spoonbill. Her question is one every local has asked out loud: how many tourists see these and think they're flamingos?

Kristi's sunset shots are the kind that make you check the time and grab your keys. The Audubon field guide describes the spoonbill as "gorgeous at a distance and bizarre up close" and locally common in coastal Florida. The bill is the tell. It's flat at the end, like somebody built a bird around a salad server. A flamingo would never.

Global Cat Day, and Sarasota's cats got trophies

Today is Global Cat Day and National Feral Cat Day, which Alley Cat Allies runs every Oct. 16 to get people doing something good for the cats in their neighborhoods. Right on cue, Sarasota's Cat Depot announced this morning that it won five honors in Sarasota Magazine's 2026 Best of Sarasota awards.

Their line is the right one: "Five wins. One incredible team. So many cats counting on us." Minutes later they posted a cat on "Butterfly Patrol," which is as close to a real job as most cats get. Congratulations to everybody over there. Scratch somebody behind the ears tonight.

The folding iPhone opened for pre-orders

Apple's iPhone Duo went up for pre-order at 5 a.m. Pacific this morning, which was 8 a.m. our time. Per Apple's newsroom, it opens into Apple's biggest iPhone display ever, with an inner screen 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max's, and closes down to a 5.4-inch outer screen. Open, it's the thinnest iPhone Apple has made. It starts at $1,999, comes in star white or night sky, and starts arriving Friday, Oct. 23.

My first thought, as somebody who lives near a beach, was the hinge and the sand. Apple says it's rated IP68 for water and dust, which is a better beach résumé than the last three phones I owned.

Monday, a probe leaves to bring home a piece of a Mars moon

Japan's space agency, JAXA, is set to launch its Martian Moons eXploration mission, MMX, at 3:41 p.m. EDT on Monday, Oct. 19, from Tanegashima Space Center, per NASA, which has an instrument called MEGANE on board. The spacecraft reaches Mars in August 2027, scoops up a sample of the moon Phobos no earlier than December 2028 and brings it back to Earth in 2031. ESA says it'll be the first mission ever to bring a Phobos sample home, and it's dropping a little rover named Idefix on the surface in early 2029.

JAXA streams it live on YouTube. A 3:41 p.m. Monday launch is one you can watch from your desk without anybody asking questions.

Also, it's Boss's Day

National Day Calendar has Oct. 16 down as National Boss's Day, plus National Dictionary Day for Noah Webster's birthday and Department Store Day. If you're picking up something for the boss on a budget, Costco's food courts just rolled out a limited-time $2.99 apple pie sundae, vanilla soft serve with apple pie filling and crust pieces, per Dexerto. Bring two. One's for you.

That's the good news for Friday. Rays at 8, Mars on Monday, and if you see a pink bird with a spoon for a face this weekend, it's not a flamingo. Tell the tourists gently.
