Four Meetups Built for People Who Show Up Alone
A full-moon walk around the Celery Fields, pool in the grown-ups' room at Livingston's, trivia entirely in Spanish and singles mini golf at UTC. Four Meetup.com picks, Oct. 25-29, and not one of them needs you to bring a friend.
Heads up, this one's from Oct. 22. The newest Meetup Picks is Four Meetups, Four Dress Codes, One of Them Bans Flip-Flops (Oct. 29).

The hardest part of meeting people in Sarasota isn't the meeting. It's the twenty minutes in the car beforehand, deciding whether you actually have to go in. So this week I went looking for Meetup.com plans that have already thought about the person who shows up alone, slightly early, pretending to read a menu. All four below say, more or less, that you are expected and they have a plan for you.
Sunday: a full-moon walk at the Celery Fields
Florida Adventures and Explorers has a 4-mile Full Moon Hike on Sunday, Oct. 25, 6 to 8 p.m., around the Celery Fields and up the hill, timed for the birds heading to roost. The one instruction they put in capital letters: do not park in the main Celery Fields lot. Meet at the Bird Boardwalk off Raymond Road instead (directions are on the event page). Bring a chair, bug spray, water and a hat, and know going in that there's long grass, so this is not the outing for anyone with strong feelings about snakes. The spot where the group watches the moon come up is shared only with people who RSVP. It's free, and a guest is fine as long as they join the group and RSVP too.
The timing is good. The Hunter's Moon is full just after midnight that night, and I wrote up where to watch it rise if you'd rather sit on a beach facing the wrong way. Nobody at a full-moon bird walk is going to ask what you do for a living. They're going to point at a gallinule.
Monday: 8-ball in the grown-ups' room
The Campfire Experience is back at Livingston's Amusement Center, 5947 Clark Center Ave., Monday, Oct. 26, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., for an 8-Ball Mixer in the adults-only enclosed room. Two to four players per table, and you can sit out a game or play every rack. Tables run $7.50 an hour after their discount, split among whoever's playing, so with a full table your share of the evening is a few dollars and a little pride. No skill needed. Look for the inflatable campfire on the table, which is apparently this group's flag and, frankly, works better than a sign.
Wednesday: trivia, but every question is in Spanish
SRQ Spanish Social & Conversational runs Noche de Trivia en Español at Calusa Brewing, 5377 McIntosh Road, Wednesday, Oct. 28, 6 to 8 p.m. They build teams of three or four when you arrive and deliberately mix native speakers with learners, so you're not stuck at the table of people who took one semester in 2009. Three rounds: Sarasota and the Gulf Coast, Hispanic food, music and culture, then slang and true-or-false. The event page says most people come solo. RSVPs close Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 6 p.m., and there are 24 spots. Look for their signs in the main taproom.
If you get a question about Sarasota geography wrong in a second language, that's a forgivable offense. Getting it wrong in English is how most of us got here.
Thursday: singles mini golf at UTC
Sarasota Social Singles 20-40 is playing mini golf at PopStroke Sarasota, 195 University Town Center Drive, Thursday, Oct. 29, starting at 6 p.m. Everyone pays their own admission, food and drinks, and people may stick around to eat after. Heads up: when I checked Thursday morning, 39 of the 40 spots were taken, so if you want in, RSVP now and expect the waitlist to be part of the experience. Mini golf is the ideal first-meeting activity because there's always something to look at besides each other, and nobody is good at the windmill.
Planning the rest of the week
Halloween weekend has its own crowded calendar, and our Halloween Finder keeps the verified events in one place. My Coming This Week list has everything else.
Check each event page before you go, since hosts move things around. Then go in. The car is not that comfortable.
