Food

This Bradenton Pantry Reads Like a Bar Menu. Everything Is $13.

Sunshine Canning has been putting up Florida jams, pepper jellies and pickles in small batches since 2012. The lineup includes Whiskey Dills, Blackberry Gin Jam and Red Wine Beets, and every single jar costs the same.

Read the product list at Sunshine Canning out loud and someone at the next table will ask if you're ordering for the group.

Whiskey Dills. Maple Bourbon Pickles. Peach Bourbon Jam. Blackberry Gin Jam. Passionfruit Rum Jam. Red Wine Beets.

I have been to bars with a shorter spirits list than this pantry. And this is a Bradenton company that has been, per its own homepage, "preserving Florida's harvest since 2012," in small batches, by hand.

The menu, as I'd order it

Everything in the shop is $13. The jam is $13. The okra is $13. The fancy bourbon pickle is $13. There is no top shelf. It's the most democratic menu in Manatee County.

The jams and jellies, with the bar section first because I'm only human:

Then the pickle aisle: Whiskey Dills, Maple Bourbon Pickles, Sweet & Spicy Pickles, Sweet Pickled Jalapeños, Pickled Okra, Dilly Beans and Red Wine Beets.

Red Wine Beets is the one that gets me. Somebody looked at a beet and decided it should have a wine pairing built in. That's confidence.

Build your own flight

There's a build-your-box option where you mix and match any of their 9-ounce jams and 16-ounce pickles, shipping included. They say boxes usually ship in three to five business days, so if you want a holiday gift that looks like you tried, now is the window.

Where to find them this weekend

No storefront. From their markets page, the local move is the Bradenton Public Market on Old Main Street, which runs Saturdays, October through May, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Season's open. Go Saturday.

Don't want to wait until Saturday? Their retail partners page lists Bread Bandits, Burns Mercantile and Morton's Gourmet Market in Sarasota, plus AMI Fresh Market and Olive Oil Outpost on Anna Maria Island.

And circle Dec. 12 and 13: the Atomic Holiday Bazaar in Sarasota is on their upcoming events list.

The last call

More local jam and preserve makers are on Gigly under jam. If you like your sweet with a kick, the Heritage Bee Farm hot honey is out in Myakka City and the FAS Sauce berry trilogy is down in Venice. Sandy has the rest of the week and this week's meetups, and the costumes are all in the Halloween Finder.

Cream cheese is in aisle nine. You know what to do.
