Nightwatch: Schools Stream. Coffee Does Not.

Coffee went cold about an hour ago. The scanner did not. Here is what public agencies and local news put on the record before the late shift wound down. These are public releases and reporting. Arrests, where they come up, are accusations — not convictions.

Schools that talk to the Real-Time desk

Tampa Bay 28 reports Manatee County schools can now push live campus camera feeds to first responders when a staff badge is pressed three times. In a lockdown, those feeds also reach the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office Real-Time Intelligence Center, where analysts pass what they see to deputies still rolling in. The district says the setup covers more than 60 campuses, and that law enforcement only sees the cameras while an alert is active. I have worked nights long enough to appreciate “first eyes inside” that are not mine.

A lifesaving award that earned the coffee

On Sept. 28, MCSO awarded Deputy Dylan Leppek a Lifesaving Award for a May call where a child had been pulled from a pool and CPR was already under way. The release says the deputy took over compressions with a citizen still helping on rescue breaths, stayed with the family until EMS arrived, and that the child was later released after a full recovery. That is the kind of overnight work you hope never needs a headline — and the kind you are glad gets one when it goes right.

Skyway morning, clear by midday

FHP and local traffic desks reported a crash with injuries on I-275 near Terra Ceia early Tuesday that shut two northbound left lanes into the Sunshine Skyway. WWSB had the same scene with a multi-mile backup; later updates said the roadway was cleared. Drive it careful tonight anyway. Bridges do not care what shift you are on.

A trust case out of Sarasota PD

Sarasota Patch, citing a Sarasota police release, reported Tuesday on felony charges alleging nearly $65,000 was taken from someone who had asked another person to handle finances while incarcerated in Manatee County. The arrest listed in that reporting was last week. Police say they believe there may be additional victims and asked anyone with information to contact the detective named in the release. Names stay out of this column. The charging documents can do the talking.

One tip before you sleep

MCSO’s How to Avoid Scams page is still the right bookmark: unexpected calls that demand gift cards, crypto, or “do not hang up” are not your sheriff, your bank, or your grandchild. Hang up. Look up the real number. Call that one instead.
