The scanner hummed. The coffee did not. Between the late edition and now, the public blotter stayed mostly polite. These are public releases and reporting. Arrests, where they come up, are accusations — not convictions.

The desk that noticed the fuel card

MCSO named Fleet Administrative Assistant Eileen Ventriglia Employee of the Month for August after she flagged a fuel-card charge that did not match how the fleet usually fills up. The card was canceled. The tip moved into a criminal investigation. Investigators say surveillance, Flock cameras and other work led to a search warrant, seized counterfeit cards and skimming gear, and an arrest on multiple felony charges, plus more victims tied into a larger statewide fuel-skimming case. Names of the accused stay out of this column. The charging paperwork can handle that. Overnight tip from me: the people who never make the 11 o’clock lead sometimes still keep the lights on.

If you walk or ride after dark, light yourself up

MCSO’s High Visibility Enforcement for pedestrians and bicyclists runs from Sept. 1, 2026, through May 7, 2027, on a long list of county corridors that have seen serious crashes — stretches of 14th Street West, U.S. 41, S.R. 70, Cortez Road and others. The office says the work is mostly education, with warnings or citations when needed. Their overnight-friendly reminders: drivers watch speed and stay sober; bicyclists ride with traffic and use lights at night; pedestrians use crosswalks and make sure drivers can actually see them. Reflective gear is not a fashion statement at 2 a.m. It is how you stay a person instead of a silhouette.

New Florida licenses start today

FLHSMV says redesigned driver licenses and ID cards begin issuing Wednesday, Sept. 30, at service centers statewide, with online ordering through MyDMV Portal expected by early November. The new design leans on Florida history — Castillo de San Marcos on the front, a manatee in the corner, Space Shuttle Discovery on the back — and keeps the high-security features. You do not have to rush the DMV. Valid cards stay valid until they expire. I will still check the photo against the face at the window, same as always.

Quiet overnight does not mean nobody is working. It means the blotter gave me room to finish the coffee before it went fully cold. Sandy will have the morning roundup. I will keep the scanner on until then.
