Tamiami Just Got a French Counter Habit

I went looking for a coffee stop. The menu answered with butter, then dinner for two. Classic Suncoast plot twist.

Comptoir: The Counter Café is prepping the former Shelf Indulgence Used Book Café space at 2805 N. Tamiami Trail, right across from Ringling College. French-born chef Gregory Desvenain and co-owner Cemantha Crain hope to open by Oct. 5, with daily hours 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Comptoir means café or shop counter — the place you lean in, order, gossip a little, and somehow leave with more than you meant to.

Point chaud, Gulf edition

Per Sarasota Magazine, the concept is a French point chaud: coffee, bread, pastries and quick meals all day. Expect crêpes, quiches, soups, salads, baguette sandwiches, French baked goods and espresso. Most dishes are aimed under $20, casual enough for Ringling students and neighborhood regulars who "just needed caffeine."

Signature sweet: kouign-amann — laminated, caramelized, unapologetically buttery — classic and apple-filled. Lunch hero: Le Petit Vendôme, ham, Normandy butter and cornichons on a soft baguette with salad or homemade soup, roughly $15. Croque monsieur, pains au chocolat and cookies round out the counter. I am unofficially calling my order strategy the Trail Full Stack: espresso, one pastry I can pronounce, one I am still practicing, zero restraint.

Here is the part that ruined my "quick stop" plan. Desvenain also plans take-home dinners — duck confit, beef Burgundy, blanquette de veau. A beef Burgundy with fresh local pasta is expected to feed two for about $22 to $24. So yes: you can walk in for a kouign-amann and walk out with dinner that looks like you planned ahead. Soft launch first, social photos later — Crain told the magazine they want the real counter experience before the highlight reel.

Check that Sarasota Magazine write-up for updates before you race over; opening weeks love a "almost" day. Indian Beach–Sapphire Shores is about to smell like butter. I will be the one pretending the dinner carton is "for later" while the pastry is still warm.
