Saturday at Tara: Golf for Dogs Who Need a Couch

First annual Bonnie Jean Golf Tournament at The Preserve at Tara on Saturday, Oct. 3. Eight a.m. shotgun, $250 a foursome, a car on a hole-in-one, and the money stays with Nate's Honor Animal Rescue in Bradenton.

I already put this on a weekend golf list earlier this week. Then I looked at the beneficiary again and figured it deserved its own tee time.

Bonnie Jean Bar & Grill is running its first annual Bonnie Jean Golf Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 3, at The Preserve Golf Club at Tara, 7310 Tara Preserve Lane in Bradenton. Shotgun start at 8 a.m. The money goes to Nate's Honor Animal Rescue on Lorraine Road — the same outfit in the middle of its Journey Home campaign to expand dog capacity and build a real home for the cats.

What you're buying

Per Bonnie Jean's tournament page and The Suncoast Post's write-up:

  • $250 for a foursome
  • $350 for a foursome plus a hole sponsorship
  • Challenges, a 50/50, silent auction, prizes
  • Hole-in-one contest with a shot at a car
  • An appearance by John Daly's Good Boy Team, which is either the best or the most Florida sentence on this page

Register and pay on the tournament page (Square checkout), or call Bonnie Jean at 941-334-6118. Sponsors and auction donations: bonniejeangrill@gmail.com or (407) 466-5182.

Why this one

Nate's Honor takes in homeless, abandoned and injured dogs and cats in Bradenton. Journey Home is a capital campaign — new buildings, more kennels, a dedicated cat area. Golfers get a morning on a local course. Animals get closer to a couch. That trade feels clean.

If your Saturday swing looks like a man arguing with a folding chair, you are still welcome. The dogs will not grade your short game.

A quiet note for the wine people reading this for some reason: after eighteen holes, something cold and white with lunch at Bonnie Jean is the correct sequence. The dogs can wait until you finish the bottle.
