A $22 Sandwich With a Fried Egg on Top Is Coming to Lakewood Ranch. Twice.
Kiito is a family-run Uruguayan food truck that spends most of October up in Tampa Bay. Two Wednesdays it comes south with the chivito, a steak sandwich that keeps going after you think it's done.
Most of my October scrolling ends the same way. I find a food truck, I fall for the menu, and then I open the calendar and it's in Dade City.
Kiito Food Truck almost did that to me. Its October schedule is a road trip: Tampa, Dade City, Ruskin, Plant City, Apollo Beach. But look closer and there are two Wednesdays where it drives down to us. I have both circled.
Who's cooking
Kiito is Sebastian and Cinthia. Per their own site, they're both originally from Uruguay, met in the U.S., and started the truck to bring their food and a piece of their culture to whoever walks up to the window. They call it a family business, and their story is written in both English and Spanish, which I find very calming.
The sandwich in question
The star is the chivito. Kiito's homepage says it was born by chance in Punta del Este in 1944, and that over time it grew into a fuller sandwich with lettuce, tomato, cooked ham, bacon, mozzarella and a fried egg.
Read that list again slowly. Most sandwiches stop at the cheese. The chivito treats the cheese as a halfway point. Then it adds an egg, because apparently nobody in 1944 told it to stop.
On the truck's online menu it's $22, and I'm not even going to pretend that's a lunch-break price. That's a "we're splitting this and getting fries" price. Fries are $4.
Everything else on the window
- Choripán, $16
- Milanesa sandwich, $14
- Beef or chicken empanadas, $3 each, which is the most reasonable number on the whole menu
- Gramajo, $8
- Churros, $5, and alfajores, $4
- Something called Cochotorta for $3.50. I don't know what it is yet. I will be asking.
There's also a breakfast menu that only shows up at their Waterset stop in Apollo Beach on the second Saturday. That one we'll have to drive to. Fair is fair.
When it's actually here
- Wednesday, Oct. 21, 5 to 8:30 p.m.: Brea Apartments at Lakewood Ranch, 6325 Health Park Way. The listing opens with "Hello Lakewood Ranch neighbors!" and I'm choosing to take that personally.
- Wednesday, Oct. 28, 6 to 9 p.m.: the Wednesday Night Market at Waterside Place, 1560 Lakefront Dr. Lake, lights, a sandwich with an egg on top. That's the night.
You can pre-order on their EasyEats page, and stops can shift, so check Kiito's Instagram before you go.
If you're more of a hand-pie person, our Empanada Girl flavor-code guide is right here, and so is Dutch Empanadas in Palmetto.
Two Wednesdays. One very tall sandwich. Bring someone you're willing to share with.
