Tomorrow You Can Buy a Plant You Definitely Have Room For

Palma Sola Botanical Park's Fall Plant & Garden Festival is Sunday, Oct. 4, 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Free. Plants, artisans, music, food — and a wagon that will not fit in your car.

Northwest Bradenton has a botanical park that stays free 365 days a year and asks almost nothing of you except that you not mow the hibiscus. Tomorrow it asks a little more: come buy a plant you swore you were not going to buy.

Palma Sola Botanical Park is hosting its Fall Plant & Garden Festival on Sunday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 9800 17th Ave NW, Bradenton. Admission is free. Donations are appreciated because this is a nonprofit that gets no government subsidy and somehow keeps the gates open from 8 a.m. to dusk every day.

What is actually out there

Per the park's festival page: a huge variety of plants for sale from regional vendors, local artisan booths, live music, and food. The vibe is less "trade show" and more "nice people standing in a garden pretending their car still has cargo space."

The park itself started as the old Manatee County Nursery. Locals saved the 10 acres in the early '90s; the foundation has been running it as a free botanical garden ever since. Pets are welcome if they behave and you clean up. That is the whole dress code.

The honest Sunday math

Arrive with a short list. Leave with something that needs a bigger pot by Tuesday. Cash still helps at outdoor vendor tents. If you only walk the paths and buy nothing, that also counts — the park is open free the other 364 days too.

I will be the one who said "just looking" and somehow owns a fern, a hibiscus, and an empty nursery tray I do not remember requesting.
